Firebird mentioned in “Semanário Econômico” article

“Semanário Económico” – the best Economic Newsweek in Portugal – gives a special mention to Akropole, a software dedicated to Schools. Akropole runs on Firebird, and it’s clearly mentioned. A full copy of the article (portuguese only) is available here.

PS: On the same article (if you know portuguese and dig it a little), you will notice that the Most Productive ( profits / number of employees) company in Portugal in 2004 works with an ERP system… powered by Firebird! 🙂

Evans Data “Developers Choice – Databases 2005”

Evans Data is selling a study based on +400 software developers about the power and efficiency of databases and their tools. The databases ranked on this study are:

IBM DB2
Oracle 10g
Oracle 9i
Microsoft SQL Server
Firebird
MySQL
Borland Interbase
Postgres SQL

I’m curious to see how Firebird was ranked. If anyone has this study, please drop me a note.

This ZDNet article comments about the new rules in the Database game, where Open Source databases are forcing the comercial ones to review and change the way they do business.

Altought the article gives main focus to MySQL and PostgreSQL in the Open Source area, Firebird also got a mention:

“Other open-source databases available include Sleepycat, Firebird and Derby.”

Firebird 1.5.3 PT_BR

Paulo Henrique Albanez informs that a non-oficial version of Firebird 1.5.3 for Windows, with supports to collate PT_BR (case insensitive) is available for download here. A Linux version will be available shortly.

This version is mainly for brazilians and other portuguese speakers people who wants to get the benefits of case/accent insensitive collation for ISO8859_1/WIN1252 charsets, while FB 2.0 is not released.

AyaNova software uses Firebird

Fabio reports an article from John Cardinal, where he describes why they choosed Firebird over MS SQL Server:

“Hunting around, we discovered Firebird which I wish we had found in the first place.”

In the AyaNova site you can find a page named “Which Database should I use?“, that lists some Pros and Cons of FB x SQLServer.

An article posted on SearchOpenSource.com discusses the result of a survey where users had to compare Windows x Linux regarding many aspects, including their differences, strengths and weaknesses.

Firebird is mentioned in the article:

“On the flip side, Windows security IT professional Andy Canfield wrote about two security weaknesses in Linux that he thinks should be addressed.
Canfield is a member of Firebird Foundation Inc., which is a group that supports and advances the development of the open source Firebird relational database engine. He works on the Firebird Relational Database Project and is a long-time SuSE Linux user.”

The new version has some minor enhancements and a lot of bugfixes, some of them backported from the FB 2.0 branch. Linux and Windows versions are now available here.

New IBO release (4.6)

Jason Wharton informed about a new release of the InterBase Objects component suite. This release contains many bug fixes and registered users can download it from the IBO community site. The list with all the changes can be read here. An updated evaluation kit will be available soon.

Firebird very well ranked inside Brazilian Java community

Specially in Brazil, it is known that Firebird is very strong inside the Delphi community. But a survey from Portal Java, a Java devoted Brazilian portal, shows that FB is very well positioned among the +2,380 Java users who had voted. Check the full ranking here.

PS: Unfortunatelly the survey option shows “InterBase/Firebird”. I hope survey/poll publishers start to understand that they are diferent products, and separate them in the next surveys.
